Technology Intervention

I think I may need a technology addiction intervention. Some sort of support group to help my habit. At one point today I had my iPad off to the side on a table, my laptop opened, and my Xbox 360 running. The only thing missing from the picture was some little robot carting my ice coffees in from the kitchen and me dressed up like Captain Kirk sitting in my over sized Lazy Boy (which I might add lived up to its name today. It enabled me to be very lazy).

It got so bad today leaving the chair to use the restroom felt like a major inconvenience. I bounced back and forth from playing video games, surfing the web, reading comics, reading a China Mieville novel, and playing Words With Friends (all of that happened on my iPad except the video game). I did manage to actually get up at one point and make dinner but only because it was starting to feel like my stomach was eating itself.

I am afraid to add up all the pieces of technology I have in my house. I am sure the number is staggering. If there is a bright side I don’t buy a new desktop computer every year anymore (I am no longer a heavy computer gamer which used to drive my computer purchases) and I don’t spend as much time playing video games as I used to.

I always read about these “unplug for the day” events and laugh. The theory is that if you unplug your life will be better. To which I say, “not my life.” You know what will make my life better, virtual reality. Then I can be a legend in my own mind for real!

I am actually not this bad all the time. We spend a lot of the summer traveling and while I will have my technology with me it will be for blogging and writing (okay maybe I will Tweet but people would miss me. I can’t let them down). During the week I rarely play video games anymore and while I do bounce around on Twitter much of my time is spent reading and writing. The weekends are another story. I need a surge protector in my chair to keep all my gadgets plugged in.

I am sad that all the promises of technology glory made to me in my youth are not going to come true. I am not teleporting, we haven’t traveled to distant galaxies, I don’t have a computer chip plugged into my brain, I won’t be able to live forever as a ghost inside the machines. The real kicker is we aren’t going to live to see any of it. The damn 2012 apocalypse is going to ruin everything. That is if the machines don’t rise up first. I think I might have had a tad too much coffee today (this is a lie. There is no such thing as too much coffee).

About csdaley

C.S. Daley was born in California but has spent most of his life in his imagination. His first short story written in third grade, the now classic "Close Encounters of the Turd Kind," was sold to his next door neighbor for a quarter. The neighbor promptly demanded a refund. An unhealthy obsession with the writings of Neil Gaiman, Christopher Moore, and Terry Pratchett have left his mind warped and broken. He spends most of his evening swilling down coffee while tapping at a keyboard under the watchful eyes of his kittens. They are there to make sure he doesn't snap. He likes to write fantasy for adults and teens.

  3. >WOW you sound like me. Yesterday I sat in front of the big tv screened computer watching a buffy marathon while playing on my laptop and at the same time fiddling around and playing games on my new droid incredible. When my bladder would start acheing id realize hmm I've been here a long time. And I did have to force myself to get up and eat dinner too lol. Earlier, I was watchng a movie instead of buffy, on the ps3. Bleh I would not want to be unplugged. I am addicted to technology.
